This is Syd Mead’s Land Yacht concept, debuted in the June 1975 issue of Playboy, serving as both a raving bachelor pad and a vision of future travel……so what happened? The swinging 60′s lit the fire for Hugh Hefner and his bathrobe and tobacco pipe aesthetic. The magazine came to represent the culture of the 70′s with the wild all-night parties, beautiful women and the somewhat lenient attitude to drugs. Playboy became Hefner’s platform for promoting his hedonistic lifestyle, and the Playboy Land Yacht was supposed to be his chariot.
The vehicle was designed by the famous concept artist Syd Mead, also known for his work on Blade Runner (one of my favorite movies), Aliens, and Tron. Syd’s work has spanned from architecture, vehicle design, interior to costumes, with his emphasis on blending unique ideals and futurism sets him apart from
a lot of other people.
“There are more people in the world who make things than there are people who think of things to make.”
- Syd Mead
