JAPANESE ARTIST MOTOI YAMAMOTO WORKS WITH AN UNUSUAL MEDIUM…SALT. WHAT HE DOES WITH THE SEEMINGLY ORDINARY CONDIMENT IT IS SIMPLY EXTRAORDINARY. APPARENTLY, ALL WORKS ARE TEMPORARY; ONCE HE FINISHES A PIECE, HE RETURNS THE SALT TO THE SEA. SO ROMANTIC FOR SOMETHING I PUT ON MY POPCORN.
The 5th of November, The Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot. Yes, in the UK today it is Guy Fawkes Night, otherwise known as Bonfire Night, Fireworks Night, or by its original name Gunpowder Treason Day. I learned about the history of Guy, or Guido Fawkes, as he was also
known, when I was a youngster. A man born in the North of England, who after a military career fighting for Spain in the Eighty Years War, went on to become involved in a plot to blow up the House of Lords, and King James I of England and Scotland, in what was known as The Gunpowder Plot of 1605. I was in fact completely incorrect, and according to an American friend of mine all you need to know about Guy Fawkes Night can be learned from a fantastic piece of informative journalism from UK reality show “The Only Way is Essex”. In my reluctance to encourage anyone to watch the show, I am told I owe it to everyone to straighten up all of the facts of 5th November, as illustrated in this clip:
Flowers are well-known for their fragile beauty, that wither away with the slightest lack of affection. Here is another interpretation of their fragility…quite literally.
Jon Shireman soaked these flowers in liquid nitrogen and took photos as they shattered on impact. Their aftermath? Bittersweet glass-like pieces and shards.
“The Autumn-Winter ’12 Limited Edition Collection is inspired by Scott’s crossing of Antarctica and the garments worn on the expedition. This collection is manufactured in the UK, using British raw materials. There are only around 100 of each style available, in memory of the 100th anniversary of Scott’s last expedition, and each garment is numbered individually.”
Mage Design’s latest creative partner, Frends, launches a revamped women’s headphone collection in Apple stores today; with an introduction on behalf of the New York Times‘ online publication, “The Get”.
Helmed by co-owner and founder Keir Dillon, the Frends team worked closely alongside Mage Design to develop a “refined and stylish” headphone which “exudes luxury and hints at grace”. This entirely fresh direction for the brand, aided in part by their ambassador, model/actress Noot Seer, was developed by our team through a series of concept presentations and final design renderings (seen below).
This year’s creative partnership between Analog and Mage Design actualizes yet another great Danny Davis signature series. The recently released “Alder” Jacket and Mitt (seen below) was conceptualized here at Mage; featuring an original, Native American-inspired illustration on the series’ patches, jacket interior, and glove screen printing. More color ways and information can be found on Analog’s website: gloves, jacket.
