“Weniger, aber besser – Less but better” – Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams is one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century, who made Braun a household name in the 50′s, producing electronic gadgets that has sent waves of design influence far into the 21st century. His passion for simplicity and honest design is always declared whenever he’s interviewed or appear in videos as the one below. His 10 principles for good design should be at the core of any designer.

– Good design is innovative
– Good design makes a product useful
– Good design is aesthetic
– Good design helps us understand a product
– Good design is unobtrusive
– Good design is honest
– Good design is durable
– Good design is consequent to the last detail
– Good design is concerned with the environment
– Good design is as little design as possible

Movement is Everything

I came across these amazing little vacuum motors by Boehm Stirling the other day and was mesmerized by the craftsmanship and impressive functionality. The principle behind the Stirling motor dates back 2000 years to the ancient Egypt, and is quite simple. A burner filled with fuel heats the air inside a cylinder and thereby purveys energy to the motor that activates through piecing of the flywheels. Check out all their desk size engines here.

First Glimpses

On February 11, 1964 an 18 year old Mike Mitchell snapped the first glimpses of what would become a worldwide phenomenon. Almost 50 years later after this first U.S. concert, a basement project of digitizing old negatives would fetch this once young photographer several hundred thousands of dollars at a recent auction.

Maison Champs-Elysées by Maison Martin Margiela

French fashion house maison martin margiela was commissioned by hotel maison champs-elysées to redecorate the historical building of the Maison des Centraliens at 8 rue Goujon in Paris. The designer has imagined 17 rooms and suites as well as the reception, restaurant, bar and cigar room.
La Maison Champs Elysées consists of two buildings, one of which dates from the Second Empire under Napoleon III. The property was designed in the now iconic Haussmann style and finished in 1866. While Margiela’s known for his Avant Guard designs, he’s toned down the sharp edge a bit to focus on a more crisp, clean and subtly detailed space- blending old and new aesthetics. White paint, deconstruction, trompe l’oeil, reappropriation, the artisanal and, last but not least, pure, dry wit are key characteristics.
